MacBook Pro Finish Wearing Off - UPDATE

MacBook Pro Finish PittingWell, I called AppleCare last night and spent 2 hours on the phone with them (an hour and a half of that was hold time). I presented my case to 2 different people and Apple declined to replace the palm rest area on my MacBook Pro, stating that it isn’t a wide spread problem.

I informed the customer service manager that I easily found several other instances of MacBook Pro finish pitting by spending a few minutes on Google and he told me that he’s never seen or heard of this before.

At this point, I really don’t know what to do. While the finish rubbing off isn’t the end of the world, it’s going to hurt me when the time comes to upgrade my notebook and I want to resell this one. I was really hoping that Apple would help me out and replace the top…

Do you have a similar problem with your MBP finish? If so, please leave a comment with a link to photos. Perhaps if we all speak up, Apple will address this issue.

If I did have the top replaced, I would definitely opt for some protection the next time around.

I’m also having the same problem. Going to contact AppleCare tonight…I’ll keep you posted.

Me too. 15″ Macbook Pro is 4 months old. I’m on hold with AppleCare in Canada right now.

Did any of you guys try going into an Apple store and showing them? It would probably be easier to convince them of the problem.

**UPDATE**
Well, after calling Apple Care and getting “We’ve never heard of that problem before…sounds like cosmetic damage…no we won’t fix it”, I set a Genius Bar appointment at the Apple store here in Jacksonville, Florida. The fella that I saw took one look at my MBP, consulted with his supervisor and agreed that my top panel should be replaced and will be covered under warranty.

If at all possible, a visit to an Apple Store often works much better than calling Apple Care.

Hey folks, for what it’s worth, i have a vaio sub notebook (cost only 3k US$ new). the finish pitting on mine also disintegrates within a few months after i bought it. needless to say, sony didn’t even bother replying to my request to fix it… at the end of the day, these are as-cheap-as-possible produced products that they sell fools like us at a premium. let the buyer beware (my next will be from dell :-).
